Return of Premier League scores huge ratings for Sky Sports

A peak of 3.4 million viewers tune in for the return of the Premier League on Sky Sports.

A peak of 3.4 million viewers tuned in to Sky Sports to watch the return of the Premier League last night, according to overnight ratings figures.

After a hiatus of 100 days, top-flight action resumed on Wednesday with Aston Villa vs. Sheffield United, which ended as a controversial goalless draw, and Manchester City vs. Arsenal, which saw Pep Guardiola's side beat the 10-man Gunners 3-0.

All remaining games this season will be broadcast on TV for the first time due to the ban on crowds, including a significant number airing free via multiple broadcasters.

Yesterday's double header was shown exclusively on Sky Sports, with 1.4 million (10.0%) tuning in to coverage of the Villa game between 4.30pm and 8pm.

The City game followed with an average of 2.6 million (14.3%), the best figures for a game since January 2017, with the peak coming at half time.

Premier League action continues tomorrow night with Norwich vs. Southampton - available free on Pick - followed by Sky Sports coverage of Spurs vs. Manchester United.
