The release clause of Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez expired on Tuesday, effectively making it harder for Barcelona to sign the Argentina international.

Inter Milan have received a boost after the release clause in Lautaro Martinez's contract expired on Tuesday.

Before the coronavirus pandemic, it had been suggested that a number of teams, including Barcelona, were contemplating whether to activate the £97m option.

Although the chances of that figure being met significantly decreased over the last four months, Inter were left powerless if an interested club stepped up their efforts to sign the Argentina international.

However, despite it being widely known that the 22-year-old's clause would be withdrawn from his contract on Tuesday, the Serie A outfit received no official bids.

While Martinez still has three years remaining on his existing deal, Inter are said to be prepared to hand the forward a pay rise in order to keep him at San Siro.
