Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has sent his best wishes to Erik ten Hag ahead of his arrival at Old Trafford this summer.

Ten Hag was officially announced as the new Red Devils boss last week, and the Dutchman will leave his current job at Ajax to replace interim boss Ralf Rangnick at the end of the season.

United have failed to win any silverware in the last five seasons and they are yet to win the Premier League title since club legend Ferguson left his post at Old Trafford in 2013.

Speaking to RTE Racing on Ten Hag's appointment, Ferguson said: "Well, I hope he does well because the club needs someone to get in control. I hope he does well."

Ten Hag, who has won five domestic trophies during his four-and-a-half-year spell with Ajax, will become the fifth permanent manager since Ferguson stepped down as United boss, after David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Man United are at risk of missing out on Champions League football next season, as they currently sit sixth in the Premier League table, six points behind fourth-placed Arsenal who have a game in hand.
