Andy Whyment reveals Corrie filming to resume on June 8

Coronation Street star Andy Whyment reveals that the soap will start filming new scenes again from June 8.

Coronation Street star Andy Whyment has revealed that the cast will be returning to film new material on June 8.

After more than two months of production shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, the government has given the go-ahead for soaps to begin shooting again providing that it can be done in a safe manner.

Emmerdale started filming a series of special lockdown episodes last week and now Corrie is gearing up for its own return.

Whyment - aka Kirk Sutherland - revealed that the soap has eight episodes that were only partly filmed before the coronavirus shutdown, so the immediate priority will be to get those completed.

Corrie is believed to have enough episodes on the shelf to last it through until July 3 - and completing those eight episodes would guarantee its broadcast throughout July and effectively mean that the soap has remained on air throughout the coronavirus lockdown without a break, albeit with a reduced episode count.

"They're looking at going back around June 8th. That's all dependent on government," Whyment told talkSPORT. "It's going to be completely different because of all the distancing, so it's going to be interesting times when we go back.

"I think they had about eight episodes half-filmed, so they're going to concentrate on getting them finished first and that will give us another three weeks then.

"I do think ITV will want to get us back up to six episodes a week as soon as they can."

Coronation Street continues Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm on ITV.
