Coronation Street revives axed storyline for Christmas

Coronation Street producer Iain MacLeod reveals that a storyline dropped due to coronavirus restrictions will instead play out at Christmas.

Coronation Street producer Iain MacLeod has revealed that a big storyline originally planned for May has been redeveloped to play out at Christmas instead.

The scenes were due to air in conjunction with the week of Britain's Got Talent live episodes, but filming on both that show and Corrie was suspended in March as the UK entered coronavirus lockdown.

The soap picked up filming again in June but is still prohibited from doing on-location shoots, meaning that the location for the scenes has had to be recreated on the set in Trafford.

"There was one, really high-profile week of episodes that would have required a location shoot and we have a [suspension] on all off-site filming at the moment so that had to go in the bin," MacLeod told reporters.

"But the story itself remained, we just had to re-figure out how it was going to play out and indeed, we've retained that big production set piece in the story, we've just moved it later on in the year.

"So rather going on location we gave ourselves time to build the required location on site.

"Most of the stories have remained with [this] one exception and even in that case it's remained, it's just been booted down in the year and it's now playing around Christmas time."

ITV Studios' head of soaps John Whiston has previously hinted that the scenes in question involve a courtroom, suggesting that they are related to the long-running domestic abuse storyline with Yasmeen and Geoff.
