BBC announces Eurovision celebration show

The BBC announces plans to stage a special Eurovision show on the night the contest was due to take place before being axed due to coronavirus.

The BBC has announced plans to broadcast a special show celebrating the Eurovision Song Contest after this year's event was cancelled due to the coronavirus crisis.

The annual singing competition was due to be staged in Rotterdam on May 16 but was officially axed last week as the deadly disease spread rapidly across Europe.

The show's organisers subsequently outlined an intent to "honour" the contestants who would have performed this year, but now the BBC have announced plans for their own tribute.

Eurovision: Come Together will be hosted by the UK's regular Eurovision commentator Graham Norton and air on the same night that the contest would have taken place.

In a press release, the BBC said: "Produced by BBC Studios the show will feature classic Eurovision performances, a look at what would have been in 2020 and entertaining interviews, including this year's UK entry James Newman."

Talks are believed to be underway for Rotterdam to host next year's edition of Eurovision, but due to competition rules, none of the songs that would have featured this year are eligible to be resubmitted.
