Piers Morgan admits Christmas holiday break in Antigua

Piers Morgan confirms that he took a holiday in Antigua over the Christmas period.

Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan has confirmed that he took a holiday to Antigua over the Christmas period.

The 55-year-old was alleged to have taken a trip to a private resort in the Caribbean just before the strictest tier four rules were imposed upon London in December.

The story was broken by the political website Guido Fawkes more than a week ago - and although no major media outlets decided to cover the news, Morgan has been subjected to relentless queries on the issue from his Twitter followers since.

Although the government advised the public to only travel abroad for "essential" reasons, Morgan did not technically break any laws with his actions; nevertheless, he has been accused of hypocrisy for enjoying a luxury holiday after encouraging GMB viewers to "suck it up" and have a more restrained Christmas due to coronavirus.

Replying to the original source of the news on Twitter, Morgan wrote: "Hi Guido, Happy New Year.

"1) The Govt said travel abroad from Tier 3 was allowed if people went straight to the airport.

"2) I didn't call for Christmas to be cancelled.

"3) I haven't flown on Virgin for a year.

"4) I last flew First Class in February.

"Otherwise, spot on!"

Antigua and Barbuda has been one of the safest countries in the world in terms of coronavirus, with just 176 cases and five deaths reported to date, while at the time Morgan took a trip into the country, the UK was reporting more than 500 deaths every day.
