Great British Bake Off 2020 winner revealed

The winner of this year's The Great British Bake Off is revealed.

Peter Sawkins has been crowned the winner of this year's series of The Great British Bake Off.

The 2020 edition of the show had been thrown into doubt earlier in the year due to the coronavirus pandemic, but producers hired out a hotel and formed a giant coronavirus-free bubble in order to film the series over the summer.

After 10 weeks, the final three - Peter, Laura Adlington and Dave Friday - faced off in one final showstopper challenge, a colossal dessert tower comprising a large cake base topped with at least three other types of bake.

When it came to the judging, both Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood agreed that Laura was out of contention and it became a two-horse race between Peter and Dave.

"This is as close to a draw as I've ever seen," noted Paul before hosts Matt Lucas and Noel Fielding revealed that Peter had won.

The 20-year-old - an accounting student from Edinburgh who had watched the show avidly since he was a child - impressed with his final bake, which featured a Victoria sandwich, chocolate & orange biscuits and lemon & blackberry choux buns.

"I can't quite believe that I'm here," he said afterwards. "I can't quite believe I made it on the show and I can't quite believe the show happened. This is going to be a really huge chapter in my life and what a way for it to end."

Paul said: "It came down to little bits of crisps on a choux bun. Peter should be exceptionally proud - he's the youngest winner we've ever had and the first Scottish winner we've ever had!"

Prue added: "Do you know I am terribly proud of Peter and I feel as if he is my grandson. He is such a nice guy and he is so eager to learn, you can't not like him."

Applications for the next series are already open.
