Adrian Dunbar is to play the lead role in Ridley, a new four-part detective drama for ITV.

Line of Duty actor Adrian Dunbar is to headline a major new ITV detective drama, it has been announced.

The actor - Ted Hastings in the popular BBC show - will play the title role in Ridley, which comes from Vera writer Paul Matthew Thompson.

The drama will follow "charismatic" Detective Inspector Alex Ridley, who has been forced into retirement against his will after 25 years working as a homicide investigator.

A shocking new case sees him brought back into the fold as a consultant by his replacement, however, and together they attempt to solve the crime.

"I don't think I've ever headed into a production with more excitement and enthusiasm," said Dunbar. "As an actor I know how rare it is to be given such a wonderful opportunity.

"Here's to getting the team together and developing a show that audiences can find both entertaining and engaging."

Ridley, which will air as four two-hour stories, begins filming this autumn.
