Strictly Come Dancing will reportedly welcome celebrity contestants aged over 60 in this year's lineup.

Strictly Come Dancing producers have reportedly scrapped the upper age limit for celebrities taking part in this year's show.

Due to coronavirus health concerns, only contestants aged 60 and under were considered for the lineup as part of sweeping changes that also saw live studio audiences scrapped and the show's duration scaled back from 13 weeks to nine.

With the situation having vastly improved thanks to the UK's vaccine rollout programme, Strictly is expected to return largely to normal this year and as a result, producers are considering contestants of all ages.

"Last year's ban was a shame to some older hopefuls desperate to take part," a source told The Sun.

"Now the seniors are being welcomed back with open arms, which is great news for viewers who like watching showbiz veterans have a go.

"Last year was seen as a triumph to get the show away under a COVID-secure set.

"Bosses now have everything in place if necessary, but they're hoping a lot of the rules will have been relaxed and will be encouraging everyone to get the jab."

A recent report indicated that this year's series will begin on September 25 and include the return of the annual trip to Blackpool in November.
