Manchester City assistant Mikel Arteta wants to be considered as a candidate to become the new Arsenal boss, according to a report.

Manchester City assistant Mikel Arteta is reportedly keen to be considered as a candidate to become the new Arsenal boss on a long-term basis.

Freddie Ljungberg is currently in charge of first-team affairs having replaced Unai Emery, although the Swede is allegedly not being considered as a genuine option for the role on a permanent basis.

Arteta was reportedly not interested in discussing the position at the Emirates Stadium due to his happiness working with Pep Guardiola at City.

However, according to the Daily Mail, the Spaniard would find the job 'too good an opportunity to turn down', while the club's former midfielder 'also has support in the boardroom'.

The Gunners have only taken one point from their two league matches under Ljungberg and will head into Monday's clash with West Ham United 10 points off the top four in the Premier League table.

Arteta has also been linked with another of his former clubs Everton, who recently relieved Marco Silva of his duties after a tough start to the 2019-20 campaign.
