Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana insists that his side will improve as the season develops following the disappointing loss to Tottenham Hotspur.

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has called for calm following his team's 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Red Devils were looking to make it back-to-back wins at the start of the new Premier League campaign, having recorded a 1-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers in their season opener.

However, Pape Sarr sent Spurs ahead early in the second half before an own goal from Lisandro Martinez secured all three points for the home side at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Man United created the better openings in the first half but were unable to take them, and Onana bemoaned his side's missed opportunities in the English capital.

"I don't think that they were better than us," Onana told Sky Sports News. "We made some mistakes second half, but football is not always about one half.

"I think we started the game really well, we created chances. Of course, unfortunately we didn't score, and I think this was a key point for us. If we had scored in the first half, it would have been a different game for sure.

"Football is about scoring goals, especially when you're playing against good opponents. We had some big chances and we didn't score, so in the end you have to pay [for that] but you have to keep calm, we have to keep working and if we keep going how we are, in the end of the season it will be ok.

"I think we made some mistakes and against a great opponent you pay. I also think in the first half we were better [than Tottenham] and could have decided the game. But in the first half unfortunately we didn't score.

"So we have to look back to the game, we have to focus on our mistakes. At the end of the day every game you lose, every goal we concede is a mistake from someone.

"But at the end of the day we are together in this. We are a big club and we have to assume the responsibility. I start with myself and I know what we have to do. I think that in the next game we can be better.

"I'm very positive. We have to stay calm, believe and keep pushing the way we work. I know we will do it."

Onana is one of three new signings at Old Trafford this summer, with Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund also arriving to boost the squad for the 2023-24 campaign.

Mount, like Onana, has started both league games this season against Wolves and Tottenham, but Hojlund is yet to feature due to a troublesome back problem.

The 20-time English champions will be aiming to bounce back from the loss to Ange Postecoglou's side when they welcome Nottingham Forest to Old Trafford next Saturday.
