Ched Evans petition reaches 100,000 signatures

A petition calling for Ched Evans to not be re-employed by Sheffield United after his prison sentence for rape ends later this month has gathered more than 100,000 signatures.

A petition calling for Sheffield United to refrain from re-signing Ched Evans has gathered more than 100,000 signatures.

The former Wales international was jailed for five years in April 2012 after being found guilty of rape, a charge which he denied.

However, the 25-year-old is due to be released from prison in the near future after serving half of his sentence.

A petition was started earlier this year calling for the Blades to not re-sign the striker, who scored 42 goals in 103 appearances before his spell behind bars.

It has since gathered more support, and The Mirror claims that more than 100,000 people have now signed it.

Professional Footballers' Association chief executive Gordon Taylor said yesterday that Evans should be allowed to return to the sport when he is released from prison.
