Second news channel in works to take on BBC, Sky

Former government advisor Sir Robbie Gibb is reportedly behind plans to launch a new news channel called 'GB News'.

Theresa May's former adviser Sir Robbie Gibb is reportedly behind plans to launch a new channel aiming to take on the BBC and Sky News.

Earlier this month it emerged that former Sky owner Rupert Murdoch is developing plans for a new Fox News-style channel in conjunction with Discovery and his News UK firm and is hoping to convince the likes of Andrew Neil and Nigel Farage to join the project.

According to the Daily Mail, a second channel is in development under the guidance of Gibb and has already secured a broadcast licence from Ofcom under the name 'GB News'.

While GB News will operate as a traditional linear station when it launches early next year, Murdoch's project is thought to be envisaged as an online-only prospect, at least initially.

A GB News source told the newspaper: "The channel will be a truly impartial source of news, unlike the woke, wet BBC. It will deliver the facts, not opinion dressed up as news.

"Everyone who works for GB News will have total commitment to quality journalism, to factual reporting and to impartiality."

Meanwhile, a source close to the Murdoch project insisted that the new channel would not be positioned as a UK version of FOX News Channel, instead describing it as a "TV version of talkRADIO, talkSPORT and Times Radio".
