Jerry Lee Lewis, the legendary rock and roll singer known for songs including 'Great Balls Of Fire', dies at the age of 87.

Legendary rock and roll singer Jerry Lee Lewis has died at the age of 87, his family have announced.

The star - nicknamed 'The Killer' - was known for songs including 'Great Balls Of Fire' and 'Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On', while he was a four-time Grammy winner and a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 1986.

The news of his death came two days after an erroneous report that he had passed away, with a spokesperson confirming that he died of natural causes at his home in Memphis on Friday morning.

Paying tribute on social media, Sir Elton John wrote: "Without Jerry Lee Lewis, I wouldn't have become who I am today. He was groundbreaking and exciting, and he pulverized the piano. A brilliant singer too.

"Thank you for your trailblazing inspiration and all the rock 'n' roll memories."

Lewis was married seven times - including, controversially, to his 13-year-old cousin once removed - and has four surviving children.
