Kylie Minogue wins the battle with Little Mix to claim this week's UK number one album, in the process setting a new chart record.

Kylie Minogue has triumphed in the battle with Little Mix to be crowned this week's UK albums number one, according to final sales data from the Official Charts Company.

The Aussie popstar's 15th studio album DISCO finished the week with 55,000 chart sales, just ahead of the girl group's Confetti, which settles for number two.

In the process Minogue has set a new record, becoming the first female solo artist ever to claim a number one album in five consecutive decades, having first topped the charts in 1988 with her debut Kylie.

"I don't know what to say, I'm lost for words," Minogue said of the accolade. "Thank you to everyone who has supported this album and this campaign, it means the world to me.

"I'm so touched that it's made its way to your hearts. I love it!"

Also breaking a chart record this week is Dame Shirley Bassey, who becomes the first female artist to have a Top 40 album in seven consecutive decades, with her final album - I Owe It All To You - opening at five.

On the singles chart, Ariana Grande notches up a third week at number one with 'Positions' following another 44,000 chart sales, including 5.4 million streams, while album track 'pov' charts at 22.

Following the release of Confetti, Little Mix's 'Sweet Melody' rises nine places to a new peak of three, while the title track from the album is at 23.
