Arsenal 'yet to open contract talks with David Luiz'

Arsenal are reportedly yet to negotiate terms over a new contract for defender David Luiz, who is expected to leave the club this summer.

Arsenal are reportedly yet to negotiate terms over a new contract for defender David Luiz.

The Brazilian was handed an extra 12 months on his deal last summer after impressing Gunners boss Mikel Arteta with the impact he had at the club, using his experience to guide some of the younger players in the squad.

However, the 33-year-old's current contract expires in June and he is expected to leave Arsenal at the end of the season.

Football Insider reports that Arsenal's squad planning for the summer transfer window is already underway, with several players including Luiz having uncertainty over their futures.

A possible extension for Luiz would only make sense if he were willing to agree to a player-coach role at the club and accept that his game time would be limited.

Central defenders Rob Holding, Gabriel Magalhaes and Pablo Mari all provide competition as defensive options and are all aged 27 or under.

Luiz has made 14 appearances in the Premier League so far this campaign as well as featuring three times in the Europa League, scoring once against Rapid Vienna in October.
