Atletico Madrid loan Cani from Villarreal

Spanish champions Atletico Madrid confirm the loan signing of experienced midfielder Cani from La Liga rivals Villarreal on a deal until the end of the season.

Atletico Madrid have confirmed the signing of Cani on loan from Villarreal until the end of the season.

The 33-year-old has started just five La Liga games for the Yellow Submarine this term, but Diego Simeone sees a role for him at the Spanish champions.

Sporting director Jose Luis Caminero believes that the experienced midfielder will increase competition for places.

"He is a proven player in our league with tremendous quality, who will increase competition within the squad," Caminero told reporters.

"We are very happy with his arrival because he will contribute a lot to the team in this decisive period of the season."

Cani, who is capable of playing on either wing, has made nearly 200 appearances for Villarreal since joining from Real Zaragoza in 2006.
