The 23-year-old is expected to be out for up to four weeks, Dortmund's team doctor Markus Braun announced.
That means that he will miss the start of the new Bundesliga campaign, including tomorrow's DFB Super Cup fixture with Bayern Munich.
The German international joined Dortmund from 1860 Munich in 2009.
