Hans-Joachim Watzke: 'Borussia Dortmund not about individuals'

Borussia Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke takes a dig at the Premier League as speculation surrounding the future of Gabon's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang grows.

Borussia Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke has responded to speculation linking the club's top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang with a January move to the Premier League.

The Gabon international has scored 27 times in 27 appearances for Dortmund this season, including 18 in 17 Bundesliga games.

Both Arsenal and Liverpool have been linked with a £42m move for the 26-year-old, who is said to be considering his future in Germany.

Watzke has insisted that his club will always be bigger than individuals, while taking a dig at the Premier League for its lack of a winter break.

"One must never make the mistake to believe that a club like BVB is dependent on a player. We are not dependent on anyone," he told Bild. "We are now so well positioned that we can offer alternative solutions again and again.

"[The goal is that] our team stays together. We do not have as much money as the top stars in the Premier League, but we have a lot of other things to offer - for example our players were able to celebrate Christmas."

Aubameyang has already scored two more goals this season than he managed in the entirety of the 2014-15 campaign.
