Gillingham cause a Capital One Cup first-round upset with a 2-1 win over Championship side Bristol City at Ashton Gate.

Martin Allen's reign at Gillingham has begun with a Capital One Cup shock over Championship side Bristol City at Ashton Gate tonight.

A goal each from strike pair Danny Kedwall and Ben Strevens earned the Gills a place in the second round and a potential tie against Premier League opponents.

Kedwall gave the visitors a half-time lead with a 45th-minute penalty, which came as a result of a handball from Liam Fontaine.

Gillingham's surprise advantage was increased seven minutes into the second period when Strevens netted a debut goal after latching on to Andy Frampton's flick on from Charlie Allen's corner.

Substitute Marvin Elliott, who was making his return from a lengthy injury layoff, gave City late hope with a stoppage-time goal but Gillingham hung on to claim a deserved victory.
