Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk suggests that he is still hopeful of joining Liverpool in January despite seeing his proposed summer move to Anfield break down.

Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk has hinted that he is still keen to leave the club after being refused a transfer to Liverpool during the summer window.

Liverpool were understood to have beaten the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City to the Dutchman's signature, only to officially withdraw their interest and submit an apology to Southampton after being reported to the Premier League for an alleged illegal approach.

Van Dijk made no secret of his desire to leave even after the move broke down, though, and despite making his first start since January during Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Stoke City, the centre-back is still keeping his options open.

"I'm glad I'm fit again and I can give up 100%. I'm not sorry for anything," he told Fox Sports.

"Of course, I wanted to make a step up, but Southampton did not want me to sell me, but you're a professional, so now I'll give everything to the club. Halfway through the season, maybe we can see what's possible."

Van Dijk, who is currently on international duty with the Netherlands, has more than five years remaining on his contract at St Mary's.
