Ivan Cavaleiro fires Deportivo La Coruna past Athletic Bilbao

Ivan Cavaleiro's first-half strike gives Deportivo La Coruna a much-needed victory over Athletic Bilbao at Riazor.

Deportivo La Coruna have defeated Athletic Bilbao 1-0 at Riazor this evening to ease their relegation worries at the bottom end of the La Liga table.

Borja Viguera came close to opening the scoring on a couple of occasions inside the opening 17 minutes for the visitors, first failing to get the better of Fabricio when well placed inside the box, before firing wide of the target with another opportunity soon after.

The two missed openings proved costly for the visitors, as Ivan Cavaleiro latched onto Alex Bergantinos's cross to fire Deportivo ahead midway through the first half.

Deportivo were able to stay resilient for large parts of the second period, although they almost came unstuck late on when Inaki Williams met a cross into the box, which he headed narrowly over the bar.

Viguera managed to keep a headed attempt of his own on goal shortly after, although it was well kept out by Fabricio once more, while at the other end Gorka Iraizoz was on hand to keep out Helder Postiga, who looked to make sure of things at the death.

In the end it was the Blue and Whites who laid claim to the three points, taking them up to 15th place in the standings.
