Klopp: 'Gomez is growing in confidence'

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes that Joe Gomez's "confidence is growing" after helping the Reds to three clean sheets on the bounce alongside Virgil van Dijk.

Jurgen Klopp has heaped praise on Joe Gomez for the versatile defender's part in three successive clean sheets for Liverpool.

The England international has slotted in alongside Virgil van Dijk in the heart of the Reds' defence for their perfect start to the Premier League season.

Gomez came out on top in his personal battle with veteran Brighton & Hove Albion striker Glenn Murray in Liverpool's 1-0 win at Anfield on Saturday evening, while also demonstrating his versatility by switching to right-back after Trent Alexander-Arnold made way.

Speaking to reporters at his post-match press conference, Klopp said: "Joe has been very good and today was a big test. Obviously Brighton thought 'let's pick Joe Gomez for the long ball challenge with Murray' and Joe did really well.

"I don't think he made one foul. He won maybe 70-80% of those duels and Murray had one or two foul situations, and from my point of view [to give] a third or fourth one would not have been a mistake either.

"Joe did really well. He is a good footballer. I like how his confidence is growing as well. His speed is good, and there are a lot of nice things for us."

Gomez is expected to be named in Gareth Southgate's squad for England's games against Spain and Switzerland next month.
