Brendan Rodgers: 'Steven Gerrard has shown great character'

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers praises Steven Gerrard's resolve after bouncing back from his costly error against Chelsea at Anfield last season.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has hailed the character of skipper Steven Gerrard to bounce back from his error against Chelsea last season.

The 34-year-old made a crucial mistake against the Blues that allowed Demba Ba to fire Jose Mourinho's side ahead, in a match they won 2-0 at Anfield to derail the Reds' title hopes.

Rodgers has admitted that he is delighted with the response Gerrard has made to the setback in the current campaign, and feels that it is testament to the overall quality of the former England international.

"I think it would have broken weaker characters. But Steven has got the inner strength that only the very, very best players have," Rodgers told reporters.

"You have to have that to perform at the level he has for 15 years at one of the top clubs in the world where the scrutiny is on you week in, week out.

"He has performed at a level that gets him over disappointments, that allows him to keep going and it is his character that defines him above even his talent. He has been remarkable for this club throughout his career here, and will continue to be."

Liverpool face Chelsea in their Premier League clash at Anfield later today.
