West Ham United beat Manchester City to consolidate fourth position

West Ham United survive a late Manchester City onslaught to record a 2-1 win over the Premier League champions.

West Ham United continued their excellent run of form with a 2-1 win over champions Manchester City in the Premier League this afternoon.

Goals from Morgan Amalfitano and Diafra Sakho left the home side two goals ahead after 75 minutes, but David Silva had one back for the visitors late on. The Hammers held on for all three points, however, to record their fifth league win of the season.

The first attempt came from Sergio Aguero inside two minutes, but West Ham goalkeeper Adrian was across to palm clear the Argentine's deflected effort.

City continued to control the opening minutes, with Silva curling a free kick just high four minutes later, before Vincent Kompany planted a powerful header over the crossbar. West Ham remained a threat on the counter, however, with Kompany forced into a couple of early mistakes.

The home side had a golden chance after 19 minutes when a straight free kick was met by Enner Valencia, but Joe Hart just did enough to clear the danger.

West Ham were ahead three minutes later, however, when Amalfitano turned home from close range following good work from Valencia on the wing.

City responded with a series of attacks, but Adrian denied Silva, before Stewart Downing headed over the City crossbar down the other end.

Both sides had half-chances in the latter stages of the half, but neither could add to the scoring despite Valencia and Aguero both coming close with efforts.

West Ham continued to press in the early stages of the second period, but Downing fired wide from close range after more panic inside the City box.

Sakho then came close for the home side, but the striker volleyed just high of the crossbar after pulling clear of Gael Clichy.

Aguero had a half-chance for the visitors moments later, but the Argentine could not bundle the ball home following a period of panic inside the West Ham box.

City had a golden chance to level after 65 minutes, but Aguero rattled the crossbar from close range, before Toure was denied by the diving Adrian. The match continued to flow from end to end, however, and it was West Ham that were next to come close when Sakho placed one just high of Hart's crossbar.

Down the other end, Toure rattled the crossbar after 74 minutes as the match somehow remained 1-0 to the home side.

City were made to pay for that miss as West Ham had their second moments later when Sakho headed home at the far post despite the best efforts of Hart, who came close to making the save. However, minutes later, City were level when Silva angled an effort into the bottom corner from just inside the box.

The expected City onslaught occurred from that moment, while the home side remained a threat on the counter-attack. Toure fired just wide of the post for the visitors, but the Hammers entered stoppage time with their one-goal lead intact.

Stevan Jovetic tested the palms of Adrian in stoppage time, before Aleksandar Kolarov flashed one just high of the crossbar. City could not find a leveller, however, as West Ham held on for all three points.
