Al Mubarak: 'City signings must improve squad'

Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak says that Manchester City only intend to sign players who will improve the first-team squad this summer.

Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has said that any decision to sign new players for Manchester City this summer will 'not be taken lightly'.

Manager Pep Guardiola has just guided the club to a record-breaking season in the Premier League, but City are still expected to make significant additions during the next transfer window.

However, Al Mubarak has suggested that he and City are learning from previous methods in the market and will not look to stockpile an already-successful squad.

Al Mubarak told City TV: "In terms of improving the squad, we have had a lot of learning in the past. Today, we have a superbly high-quality squad. You don't get to 100 points without a full, high-quality squad, which is what we have. Any additions have to improve the squad.

"This is my biggest learning from the years of chairing this club. When winning, bringing in new players is a very important decision because you have a winning formula that has just won.

"Whatever you can add, it has to be a decision that you don't take very lightly at all. You have to bring in players that will strengthen, improve and add competition into the squad - that is key."

City have spent over £250m to bring in six first-team players at the Etihad Stadium over the past 12 months, although some of that outlay has been offset by player sales.
