Barcelona reportedly deny making a fresh attempt to sign club legend Lionel Messi, who is closing in on a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Barcelona have reportedly denied making a fresh attempt over the weekend to sign club legend Lionel Messi.

The 34-year-old has agreed to join Paris Saint-Germain on an initial two-year deal and had flown over to the French capital to undergo a medical and sign the necessary paperwork.

Barca were hoping to keep hold of the six-time Ballon d'Or winner, however the La Liga giants were unable to re-sign him due to "financial and structural obstacles".

According to Spanish football expert Guillem Balague, Barca deny making a new offer to Messi in the middle of the night and are resigned to the fact that is leaving the club this summer.

The Argentine is set to be offered the number 30 shirt at PSG and if the transfer is completed soon, then he could be in contention to make his debut on Saturday for their opening league game against Strasbourg at the Parc des Princes.

Messi, who had also been linked with a move Manchester City, made 778 appearances for Barcelona since his debut in 2004, scoring an incredible 672 goals and providing 305 assists.
