Manchester United attacker Bruno Fernandes has said that the Red Devils need to become a team used to winning trophies again.

Erik ten Hag's side booked their spot in the EFL Cup final against Newcastle United with a 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest on Wednesday night, which secured a 5-0 aggregate success.

The 20-time English champions are also in the fifth round of the FA Cup, while they will take on Barcelona in a two-legged Europa League knockout round tie later this month.

Man United are fourth in the Premier League table, meanwhile, with the club's main focus being to secure a return to the Champions League for the 2022-23 campaign.

Fernandes has said that "the club is about winning trophies", with the Portugal international determined to lift some silverware this season.

"It's a great feeling [to reach the final], amazing for everyone," he told MUTV. "We've been looking to be in this position for a long time and now we're getting there.

"We're enjoying the moment because it is a big thing; I know a lot of people will think 'it's just the Carabao Cup' for many of them, the ones that are not in the final will think like that.

"But for us and Newcastle, it will be a big, big match and a chance to win a trophy and we will go there to try our best to bring it back.

"As I've said since I came to this club, the club is about winning trophies and I want that. We want to bring a trophy back to the club."

Fernandes also opened up on the competition for starting roles at Old Trafford, with Anthony Martial and Jadon Sancho both returning against Forest on Wednesday.

"It's important for us to have competition, because you can't relax. We know how important it is to be in form. To have your place in the team, it costs a lot to be in the starting XI at this moment," Fernandes added.

"Everyone has to be pushing themselves to the highest levels to be playing for this club. It is what this club demands, it is what the manager demands, it is what us, as players, should demand from ourselves."

Man United will now switch their attention back to the Premier League, with the club preparing to welcome Crystal Palace to Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

Marcel Sabitzer could make his debut for the Red Devils this weekend, with the Austria international moving to Old Trafford on loan from Bayern Munich in the latter stages of the January transfer window.
