Gary Lineker hints at Rio Ferdinand's international retirement

Gary Lineker claims on Twitter that Rio Ferdinand may eventually call time on his international career.

Former England striker Gary Lineker has suggested that Rio Ferdinand will now quit international football.

The Manchester United defender pulled out of the squad to face San Marino and Montenegro later this month because he has a specific training programme following his recent back injuries. Had he joined up with his international colleagues, there were concerns that the 34-year-old would not be able to fulfill his requirements.

Despite the fact that Ferdinand has insisted that will still be available for selection, Lineker took to Twitter to pay tribute to the 81 performances that he made in an England shirt.

"Strange way to bow out, but @rioferdy5 was a superb player for England, who always rose to the big occasion. Did his country proud," Lineker posted.

Manager Roy Hodgson has also been quoted as saying that he is hoping to pick Ferdinand in the future.
