Report: Wayne Rooney absent from Manchester United squad

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney reportedly fails to travel to the squad's hotel ahead of their match against Liverpool in the Premier League.

Wayne Rooney has reportedly not travelled with the rest of the Manchester United squad to their team hotel ahead of their Premier League clash with Liverpool this weekend.

The club's captain, who became England's record goalscorer earlier this week after scoring in the 2-0 win over Switzerland, was not listed as a doubt for the match when manager Louis van Gaal spoke to the media earlier today.

However, the Manchester Evening News reports that the striker was not with the squad when they checked into the Lowry Hotel in Salford ahead of tomorrow's match at Old Trafford, while The Mirror adds that United have trained since Van Gaal's press conference, but Rooney was not pictured at the session.

The report adds that Van Gaal usually insists his squad travel together the night before home matches, with the players leaving their cars at the club's ground before getting a coach to the hotel, but that a spokesperson for the club declined to give a reason for the striker's absence.
