Wayne Rooney hits back at critics following his antics during the international break, describing his treatment by the media as "disgraceful".

Wayne Rooney has hit back at the controversy surrounding his behaviour during the international break, accusing the media of being 'disrespectful' and "disgraceful".

The striker was pictured looking worse for wear after apparently drinking until 5am at a wedding reception at the England team hotel last weekend, just days before the Three Lions' friendly match with Spain at Wembley.

In the wake of the incident, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho dropped Rooney to the bench for his side's stalemate with Arsenal on Saturday and, speaking to a small group of reporters after the game, a defiant Rooney shot back at his detractors.

"What's been going on is disgraceful," he said. "I'm proud to play for my country and I'm proud of my achievements. It's not finished yet.

"I think what's been going on is disgraceful. It shows a lack of respect and I think enough is enough.

"That's all I want to say."

Rooney is England's all-time leading goal scorer and the second most-capped player, six shy of Peter Shilton's record.
