Wayne Rooney backs Anthony Martial to be success at Manchester United

Wayne Rooney is confident that Anthony Martial will live up to expectations at Manchester United following his £36m move from Monaco on transfer deadline day.

Wayne Rooney has backed teammate Anthony Martial to be a success at Manchester United.

The 19-year-old Frenchman moved to United from Monaco for a fee in excess of £36m on transfer deadline day.

Manager Louis van Gaal was criticised for spending such a large sum of money on the teenager, but Rooney is confident that his new strike partner will fit in at Old Trafford.

"It's been well documented I haven't seen that much of him to be honest, so I can't really say too much on him," Rooney is quoted as saying by the London Evening Standard.

"I saw him last season against Arsenal where he had a fantastic game, so hopefully he'll be a great signing for us.

"He's got a lot of ability from what I've seen and I'm sure he'll be a good player for us."

Martial made his debut for France when he came off the bench in his side's 1-0 friendly win over Portugal on Friday.
