Barcelona emerge as shock rumoured contenders to join Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign Luke Shaw from Manchester United, albeit on a season-long loan deal.

Out-of-favour Manchester United defender Luke Shaw is wanted by Barcelona on a season-long loan deal, according to a report.

The 22-year-old has effectively been deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford by Jose Mourinho, having started just seven games in the Premier League and Champions League combined this term.

Despite his lack of form and fitness, a number of suitors - including Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur - are understood to be lining up bids for the summer transfer window.

Tottenham could face competition from Barcelona, however, as The Sun reports that the Spanish giants are keen to bring in the full-back for the 2018-19 campaign.

Shaw, who has 15 appearances to his name in all competitions this term, was most recently publicly criticised by Mourinho following the 2-0 FA Cup win over Brighton & Hove Albion last month.

The report claims that Barca will attempt to rescue the England international's career, though, as they are on the lookout for reinforcements at left-back.
