Lothar Matthaus urges Dayot Upamecano to stay at RB Leipzig

Germany legend Lothar Matthaus feels that RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano should reject a move to a bigger European club this summer.

Germany legend Lothar Matthaus has suggested that Dayot Upamecano should continue his career with RB Leipzig for at least another season.

With just over a year remaining on his contract, Upamecano has been linked with a number of top European clubs, including Manchester United, Arsenal and Barcelona.

However, rather than jump at the chance to challenge himself elsewhere, the centre-back has been urged to remain with the Bundesliga title challengers.

Matthaus told Sky Deutschland: "I can see him playing for all the big club when he gets more experience. If he does leave, he needs to make sure his new coach or club gives him the confidence to play regularly - as he is doing at Leipzig.

"He's a young player, highly rated, fast, has a good positional game and uses his body well for a 21-year-old. But a year or two in Leipzig would not hurt him."

Since the start of 2017, the 21-year-old has made 104 appearances for Leipzig in all competitions.
