Wayne Rooney signs new £300,000-per-week Manchester United contract

Wayne Rooney signs a new five-and-a-half-year contract at Manchester United worth £300,000 per week.

Wayne Rooney has signed a new £300,000-per-week contract at Manchester United that commits him to the Old Trafford club until June 2019.

Red Devils manager David Moyes confirmed in a Friday press conference that negotiations over tying down Rooney's future were close to completion.

Reports had previously suggested that the England international striker would leave the Premier League champions when his current deal, worth £250,000 per week, expired at the end of next season.

Sir Alex Ferguson claimed upon his retirement in May 2013 that the 28-year-old had asked for a transfer, but United stood firm to keep Rooney by rejecting two offers from Chelsea last summer.

He has since become a central figure in a Moyes team struggling to qualify for the Champions League, and has even been tipped to take on the captaincy when Nemanja Vidic leaves at the end of this term.

His new contract is a four-year extension and guarantees him an ambassadorial role with United when he hangs up his boots, which suggests that Rooney will remain with the club for the rest of his playing career.
