Newcastle United striker Papiss Cisse may refuse to wear a strip bearing the club's new sponsor Wonga next season, citing religious and ethical objections.

Papiss Cisse may reportedly refuse to wear a Newcastle United shirt bearing the name of sponsors Wonga next season, objecting on religious and ethical grounds.

Cisse is a practising Muslim and is thought to be unhappy about actively promoting Wonga, a company that offers quick loans at a high rate of interest.

The 28-year-old does not want to advertise the brand on his shirt next season and is considering taking a stand by refusing to wear a strip with Wonga stamped on the front, according to The Mirror.

Wonga signed a multi-year contract to become Newcastle's shirt sponsor for next season, replacing former partners Virgin Money.

The Magpies could be forced into a compromise similar to the agreement Sevilla reached with Frederic Kanoute, which saw the forward wear an unbranded strip on religious grounds.

Cisse's teammates Hatem Ben Arfa and Chieck Tiote are also practising Muslims, but are not believed to have made any specific objections known at this stage.
