On this day: Newcastle United's Temuri Ketsbaia vents frustration

Seventeen years ago today, Temuri Ketsbaia produced a memorable celebration following his winning goal for Newcastle United against Bolton Wanderers.

Last weekend, the evergreen Francesco Totti sent Twitter into overdrive when he celebrated his equalising goal in the Rome derby by taking a selfie of himself.

In days gone by, though, footballers had to be more inventive when it came to displaying their delight at having found the net.

We all remember the Brazilians rocking the baby at USA '94, Paul Gascoigne in the dentist chair during Euro '96 and Hull City's Jimmy Bullard mimicking his manager Phil Brown after his goal against Manchester City.

Yet, arguably the most memorable celebration of them all, particularly where the Premier League is concerned, was produced by Temuri Ketsbaia 17 years ago today as his Newcastle United side played host to Bolton Wanderers.

It seemed that the visiting Trotters had secured a share of the spoils when Nathan Blake cancelled out John Barnes's early strike 18 minutes from time.

However, deep into stoppage time, visiting goalkeeper Keith Branagan failed to clear the danger and the ball fell kindly for Kestbaia, who had been introduced into the action as a late replacement for Jon Dahl Tomasson.

The Georgian buried his chance to secure all three points, sparking scenes of jubilation among the Geordie faithful.

Ketsbaia, though, had no intention of joining in. Frustrated at having started the game as a substitute, he threw his shirt into the crowd, failed to remove his right boot and then instead proceeded to kick the advertising hoarding behind the goal, pushing away his teammate Alessandro Pistone in the process.

Speaking recently to the Newcastle Evening Chronicle, Ketsbaia said of that moment: "Every time I speak with someone they ask about this celebration.

"I scored a goal. I was happy to score a goal but I was not happy to not be playing and I was frustrated. It's not a normal celebration, but I play with passion and all I wanted to do was play. It was not malicious.

"Now, looking back, as a coach I understand this is not the way that a player should behave. I wouldn't be happy, but then I would admire the passion of the player."
