Newcastle United boss John Carver believes that bad luck has played a part in the club's troubles this season as they face relegation on the final day.

Newcastle United head coach John Carver believes that bad luck has played a part in the club's troubles this season.

The Magpies head into the final day of the Premier League season two points clear of the relegation zone after losing nine of their last 10 games.

Carver has lost 13 of his 19 games in charge since taking the reins after Alan Pardew left for Crystal Palace in January, but the Newcastle boss believes that things could have been different had fate been on his side.

"It's about five months now and in that time I don't think any other manager would have had to deal with everything I've had to deal with in their whole career," he told the Daily Mail.

"In a really strange way I've thoroughly enjoyed it. I really have. I think I got softened up a little bit when Alan was here and he took a bit of abuse. I got used to it.

"It's not a nice thing to happen but I'm definitely a stronger person and, whatever happens after Sunday, I'll be better for it, one way or another. If I had the chance again I'd do exactly the same and say, "Yes, I want this job". I'd just like to think I'd have the rub of the green a little bit more, a little bit more luck."

Newcastle face West Ham United at St James' Park this afternoon, needing to match Hull City's result against Manchester United to stay up.
