Ruud van Nistelrooy says that he will not be replacing Roger Schmidt as head coach of PSV Eindhoven's senior team.

Ruud van Nistelrooy has said that he will not be replacing Roger Schmidt as head coach of PSV Eindhoven's senior team ahead of the 2022-23 campaign.

Schmidt will leave his role with the Dutch giants this summer, and it had been suggested that Van Nistelrooy, who is currently in charge of PSV Under-19s, could be considered for the position.

However, the former Manchester United striker has insisted that he is 'not ready' to take on the position and will "continue to follow the trajectory" he agreed with the club.

"I can be clear about that now. I will not go through to the first-team of PSV," Van Nistelrooy told ESPN. "I don't think I'm ready for that yet. I think we should continue to follow the trajectory that we have agreed upon. The ambition and the drive are there, but it is too early now."

Van Nistelrooy scored 77 goals in 90 appearances for PSV during his professional career before making the move to Man United, where he netted 150 goals, winning the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup during his time at Old Trafford.

The 45-year-old, who is also an assistant head coach for the Netherlands, has been in charge of PSV Under-19s since June 2018, replacing Mark van Bommel.
