Andre Villas-Boas backs Jermain Defoe to break record

Andre Villas-Boas heaps praise on Jermain Defoe after the striker equalled Tottenham Hostpur's all-time European goalscoring record.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas has backed Jermain Defoe to break the club's all-time European goalscoring record.

The 31-year-old equalled Martin Chivers's tally of 22 with his side's second in their 2-0 win against Sheriff Tiraspol.

The Portuguese boss was full of praise for his striker after the match.

"It is some achievement," Villas-Boas told reporters. "If we continue like this, there is a big chance he will break the record.

"It will be another great achievement for him. I am sure he will achieve it.

"Let's not celebrate before it happens, but it will be a great record for him and the club. It was another great performance by Jermain."

Spurs' next game is against Hull City on Sunday.
