Sebastian Larsson has claimed that Sunderland will not be able to secure their Premier League status until they find consistency in the closing stages.
The Black Cats dominated Sunday's Tyne-Wear derby against Newcastle to claim a vital 1-0 victory in the battle to avoid relegation, but Larsson has urged his teammates to guard against complacency.
"We need to do it week in, week out, and that's the trick. That's the next step," the Swedish midfielder told reporters.
"We can't keep doing it on and off, we need to do it on a regular basis.
"We know it's not that easy because we've dragged ourselves back into it many times this season and before. But we're still in trouble, so let's realise that. It was a step in the right direction but now we need a few more."
Sunderland, who are currently three points clear of the relegation zone, return to action against Crystal Palace on Saturday.
