The 23-year-old produced a largely flawless display to earn a score of 15.633 from the judges and ultimately became the first British male gymnast to win any individual medal in this event.

Host nation Brazil had plenty to cheer as Diego Hypolito won silver and compatriot Arthur Mariano took bronze.

Well-fancied Japanese gymnast Kenzo Shirai failed to deliver on his high-tariff routine, stumbling twice and finishing outside the medals with a score of 15.366

Whitlock is also one of the favourites for gold in the pommel horse final, but will face competition from teammate Louis Smith, who secured silver on this apparatus in 2012.
