Liam Broady has suffered a three-set defeat to Hiroki Moriya in the first round of the Aegon Manchester Trophy.
The British number five stormed to the opening set against his Japanese opponent but he wasn't able to seal victory in the second after missing out in a tie-break.
The 21-year-old saw Moriya dominate the decider to run out a 0-6 7-6 6-1 victor, and the world number 171 will face another British player in the last 16 after Joshua Milton caused an upset against Austin Krajicek.
Milton, who lies 237 places below the 118-placed American in the world rankings, came through by a 6-4 7-6 scoreline.
Brydan Klein has also progressed through to the second round after recording a 6-2 5-7 7-6 win over British compatriot Daniel Cox.
