Mike Pettine: 'Johnny Manziel not guaranteed starting job'

Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine warns quarterback Johnny Manziel that he is not guaranteed a starting spot ahead of Brian Hoyer next season.

Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine has warned new quarterback Johnny Manziel that he is not guaranteed a starting job at the team next season.

Manziel was forced to wait longer than expected to be snapped up in the NFL Draft last night, eventually joining the Browns as the 22nd overall pick.

However, despite season ticket sales soaring once the high-profile pick was confirmed, Pettine stressed that Manziel would not be handed the job and would have to compete with Brian Hoyer for the right to start.

"I don't think you can hand jobs to people when they come in," Pettine told reporters.

"It's a situation where despite what's around him and what's following him - and there will be pressure to play him - we're in the business of evaluating the best quarterback for the Cleveland Browns to win football games, and that's who is going to play, whether that's Brian Hoyer or Johnny Manziel."

Manziel was the Browns' second pick of the first round after they had also chosen cornerback Justin Gilbert eighth overall.
