Fritz Pollard Alliance Foundation chairman John Wooten has expressed his belief that Jim Caldwell will be an "excellent fit" for the Detroit Lions.
Caldwell was named as the Lions' new head coach yesterday following a two-week search that also saw the club interview Gary Kubiak, Mike Munchak and Ken Whisenhunt.
The former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator became the second minority candidate to be appointed as a head coach this month, after Lovie Smith, and Wooten believes that it will be a fruitful partnership for both parties.
"To be openly frank, we felt that he should be the guy. We really wanted him in that particular team. Thought it was an excellent fit," Wooten is quoted as saying by ESPN.
Caldwell has experience of being a head coach in the NFL, having led the Indianapolis Colts from 2009-11.
