David Caldwell hints at Blake Bortles backup role

Jacksonville Jaguars general manager David Caldwell hints that number three overall Draft pick Blake Bortles will be used sparingly in his first season as a pro.

Jacksonville Jaguars general manager David Caldwell has hinted that Blake Bortles could be used sparingly in his first season despite being chosen third overall in the 2014 NFL Draft.

The Jaguars sprung something of a surprise by choosing Bortles, having been more strongly linked with the likes of Khalil Mack, Sammy Watkins and Johnny Manziel in the build-up to the Draft.

However, they became just the second team in NFL history to have chosen two quarterbacks with a top-10 pick within a four-year span, and Caldwell stressed the importance of taking time to make sure the former UCF Knights star is a success.

"It's such an important position in this league and you want to do it right. That's what we're about. We have to make it work. We can't just throw him out there. We've seen what happens when that happens," Caldwell told reporters.

Bortles will compete with last season's starter Chad Henne in Jacksonville.
