The Minnesota Vikings decide to release tight end John Carlson after failing to agree a new deal with the player, according to reports.

The Minnesota Vikings have decided to release tight end John Carlson after the two parties failed to agree on a new deal, according to reports.

The team had been in talks with Carlson over restructuring his contract for a second consecutive season but couldn't come to an agreement with the former second-round Draft pick.

The 29-year-old was scheduled to make $5m (£3m) during the 2014 season having signed a five-year $25m (£15m) deal with the Vikings when he joined from the Seattle Seahawks in 2012.

Minnesota would save $2m (£1.2m) in salary cap space should they release him, although they are already nearly $32m (£19.2m) below the cap.

Carlson caught 32 passes for 344 yards last season before concussion issues ended his campaign, making it four years in a row that he had failed to complete a season due to injury.
