Geno Smith confident of New York Jets starting job

New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith is confident of retaining his starting job for next season despite the arrival of Michael Vick.

New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith has insisted that he is confident of retaining his starting job with the team, despite the off-season arrival of Michael Vick.

Smith finds himself in another hotly-contested battle for the role of number one quarterback having ousted Mark Sanchez last season to start all 16 matches for the Jets in his rookie campaign.

However, despite leading the team to a respectable 8-8 record, Smith committed 25 turnovers throughout the season and faced a lot of speculation whether he was good enough to start in the NFL.

The 23-year-old believes that his experiences in 2013 will help him next year, though, and insisted that he was looking forward to competing with the 33-year-old Vick.

"[It's] my belief in myself, knowing I'm going to take every action possible to get better and come into the season a better player," Smith told reporters.

"It's going to come down to production on the field. I just believe that, with the experience I've gained, and with the direction we were heading in as an offense and where I see myself as a second-year player. I just feel I'm more than capable of being a starter.

"I understand there's a competition. It comes down to what we do on the field. I look forward to competing against a guy like Mike because he himself has been a starter and is still capable at the age he is. He still runs fast. He stills throws accurately, with great velocity, and he's a very, very smart quarterback, in my opinion."

Vick began last season as a starter for the Philadelphia Eagles before injury contributed to him losing the job to Nick Foles.
