New York Jets general manager John Idzik has said that quarterback Mark Sanchez remains a "very important player" to the franchise despite being put on their injured reserve - designated to return list.
Sanchez will be out of action until week 11 after damaging his shoulder during the Jets' pre-season game against the New York Giants.
"He's a quarterback. He's a very important player to our team," Idzik told reporters. "The designation is tailor-made for someone like this.
"It wasn't misdiagnosed at all. We were literally taking it day to day. Now, after three weeks and little bit more information, looking forward, you have to readjust your sights."
Rookie Geno Smith has started in place of Sanchez and has guided them to a 1-1 record to start the season.
